Maintaining quality care standards

As a relatively young doctor, Dr Ang Liu can offer his patients at The Fono Henderson a fresh perspective. Having spent three years as a hospital doctor, Dr Ang Liu realised he wanted to be part of the team that stops patients’ illnesses from progressing to the stage that they need to go to hospital.

“In general practice, we have a focus on prevention and education,” says the Chinese-born general practitioner.

“We see patients on a regular basis so we get to know them and develop a relationship and rapport with them to help them on their journey in life.”

Having moved to New Zealand with his parents from China at just four years old, Ang grew up in central Auckland. He attended Avondale College and Auckland Grammar School before attaining his degree in medicine from the University of Auckland medical school.

His experience as a doctor working in the hospital further cemented his resolve to work at the earlier stages of a person’s illness.

“Specialists do great work, but I realised there’s a need to get the basics right for patients before they even need to see a specialist.”

So he decided to undergo his fellowship training in general practice.

“GPs manage care soon after birth, near the end of life, and everything in between."

“It’s just a great opportunity to be part of a person's life, whatever the challenges they face, and to be able to offer them advice and interventions when required.”

Urban-dweller Ang spent only one year outside of the city, “when I did my GPEP1 training in 2016 at Dargaville”.

While it was a good experience for the Auckland doctor, Ang says he couldn’t see himself living in the quiet town of Dargaville full time.

“My friends and family are all in Auckland, so I came back and worked at a clinic,” however he somehow found himself serendipitously lined up to work at The Fono.

“It fell into place at the time,” he says. He’d just finished up from one clinic and was looking for another position when The Fono position became available.

It’s been one of the best decisions he’s made, happy to be a part of a very supportive team in a well-run clinic.

“In terms of training it’s all cornerstone accredited, everything is up to scratch and of a high standard. It’s just a nice work environment to be working in.”

Plus, it helps that the patients are also pleasant and he enjoys working with them.

“The patients are very nice people. It’s just a great place.”
