“We discussed health in the context of The Fono, both the challenges in terms of the increase in the complexity of needs of our patients and our families and how it is a challenge to cater for it,” he says.

“We also spoke about the organisational needs of The Fono and sustainability of Pacific providers, and the need to focus on diabetes and prevention, as well as prevalent health issues including tobacco, problem gambling and touched on health of older people.”

In the OCA space, the team gave an update to the Minister on the areas of development for OCA.

“We discussed increasing the EFTS (Equivalent Full Time Students) in the youth guarantee space, our model of education and branding,” says Tevita.

“We also discussed the challenges of recruitment, stronger engagement with community, OCA becoming a Maori and Pasifika trade’s provider, and shared with the Minister the challenges of not being able to resource the business needs of OCA sufficiently.”

The visit was well received and Tevita says The Fono and OCA look forward to continuing work with the current Government.
