The Fono South’s Cornerstone Achievement

The Fono South in Manurewa celebrated achieving a Cornerstone Accreditation, a Quality Standards programme set by the Royal New Zealand College of General Practitioners for general practices in New Zealand.

Cornerstone Accreditation is a self-assessment and external peer review process used by health care organisations to assess their level of performance in relation to established standards and to implement ways to continuously improve.

Sally Dalhousie, Senior Manager Services for The Fono, says the accreditation demonstrates that Manurewa can provide accountability for delivering safe, comprehensive, high quality services to patients.

“This is the first accreditation process we’ve completed with Manurewa and the clinic went through with flying colours,” she says.

“According to the auditor, in her 10 years of auditing, it was only the fifth time where a practice had met every single standard. Only four other clinics have ever achieved that.”

With an overarching aim of improving outcomes for patients, the standards include patient experience and equity, practice environment and safety, clinical effectiveness processes and professional development. 

Sally says the achievement can give patients of The Fono South confidence in receiving a quality driven service.

“It means our doctors, nurses, receptionists and management have a clear understanding of what it takes to meet those standards. We’ve demonstrated a commitment to fostering a culture of ongoing improvement within the organisation, particularly in our clinics.”

Not all medical clinics have Cornerstone Accreditation. Manurewa’s achievement means three of The Fono's four clinics (Manurewa – South, Henderson – West, Blockhouse Bay – West Central) have now done so.

The Fono Central (at St Patrick’s Square, Wyndham Street), will undergo their audit in early 2016 and the team are optimistic of achieving four from four.

“Having all of our clinics Cornerstone Accredited demonstrates our commitment to quality standards being uniform across all of our clinics for the benefit of our patients in terms of their continuity of care.”

The greatest pleasure gained for Sally and the management team was how the Manurewa staff rose to the challenge and embraced the audit process.

“They were very open because they saw it as an opportunity to identify how they can do things even better. It is an absolute privilege to work with such dedicated and willing health professionals. ”
