Biggest losers the biggest winners

The biggest losers were the big winners at the Enua Ola Aiga Challenge prize giving, held to celebrate the completion of an eight-week community weight loss challenge.

The Enua Ola programme aims to increase levels of physical activity and improve nutrition by using a community action approach. Communities come together and support each other to make lifestyle changes in a comfortable social environment with 25 community groups and churches participating in West Auckland.

Over 640 competitors joined the Aiga challenge. Throughout that time the groups and churches ran their own group exercise classes, physical activity sessions and promoted healthy eating.

The community approach allows all participants to encourage each other to achieve sustainable weight loss and healthier lifestyles.

FitComm New Lynn took out the supreme prize in 2015 for the highest group percentage of weight loss, with collective weight loss. New Lynn EFKS Congregational Samoan Church came in second, followed by the Niutupuola Health Trust.

Individually, Michael Maiiu from New Lynn EFKS Congregational Samoan Church, won the Most Weight Loss - male during the challenge. For the women’s category, Sharelle Te Whero from the Cook Island Exercise Group won while Keith Tena of Garden of Christ Youth Group took out the youth award for the most weight lost during the challenge.

The Fiaola Maloloina Group of Waitakere Methodist Samoan Parish were awarded the most innovative programme during the challenge. The group focused on sustainability, further developing their child focussed activities over the eight weeks, translating materials and key messages into Samoan, holding workshops for children to encourage the benefits and easiness of preparing homemade meals, posting weekly progress photos and conducting surveys to evaluate groups.

The Fono’s Health Promotion Team Leader and Health Committee member of the Niutupuola Health Trust group, Lingi Pulesea, says it was great to see so many take part and achieve such positive results.

“This is the third year that the Enua Ola Aiga Challenge has been run and it’s awesome to see such high percentages of weight loss being achieved,” she says.

“What was especially great was the innovations shown by some groups, building on lessons learned in previous years while seeing a bunch of new comers join the challenge, too.”

Te Atatu Samoan Methodist Youth took out the life style award as the group that had lost the most weight across all 3 Aiga challenges that have been held.

The award category encourages continuous progress toward healthy lifestyles and 5 groups qualified for the category with a total weight loss across the 5 groups of 934.66 kilos. Betty Ikinofo from Niutupuola Health Trust was awarded the Life Style Individual Award.

“It’s about long-term sustainability of healthier lifestyles. That’s what is going to keep our families living longer, living healthier.”
