Denture Treatment - Dental Case Study

Dental patient Tina* came to The Fono dental with loose and crooked teeth that were causing her pain. Here we catch up with Clinical Director of Dental Dr Mowafaq Amso on Tina’s gum disease issue and her denture treatment.

Mowafaq says it is very common to see untreated gum disease in patients, which often leads to loose teeth that become un-saveable.

Gum disease, or periodontal disease, is an inflammatory disease caused by accumulation of bacteria (dental plaque) on the teeth. If not removed by brushing and flossing, the bacteria in dental plaque can cause tooth decay and gum disease. Gum disease is a major cause of tooth loss in adults and dentures are often necessary.

Dentures (or false teeth) are constructed to replace missing teeth and are supported by gum tissue. They are custom made to fit your mouth, so they take on the appearance of your natural teeth.

Traditionally, they have been removable, but modern techniques can now provide dentures that are secured in place with dental implants, giving greater stability. They also cover less tissue, allowing for an improved ability to taste compared to older style dentures.

In Tina’s case, she had not been able to see dentists in the past because of financial constraints. Referred by The Fono’s Whanau Ora team, Mowafaq describes the seriousness of her dental condition as a 7/10.

Tina underwent a detailed consultation where Mowafaq assessed her gum disease and whether any of her teeth could be saved. It was then determined that dentures were the best treatment option.

Once Tina fully understood the denture process, moulds of her mouth were taken and sent to the lab to fabricate an immediate plate.

She then came back to have her teeth removed and the plate created from her first visit was placed on the same visit. Follow up appointments were arranged to ensure any discomfort Tina experienced was relieved.

The end result is a relieved patient that no longer experiences pain nor does she worry about her deteriorating teeth.

Mowafaq says Tina loves the results.

“Tina’s results are excellent. She is free from pain and much happier about her dental situation.”

And Mowafaq’s advice to others?

“Be sure to have regular check-ups with your dentist and clean your teeth thoroughly and regularly as instructed.”
