Mo keen to grow

The Fono’s Dr Mowafaq (Mo) Amso has been appointed Clinical Director of Dental. Having been with The Fono for more than five years, the charismatic dentist is keen to make his mark, continually improving and growing the dental services on offer across our three Auckland dental clinics.

As Dental Clinical Director at the Fono, Dr Mo Amso performs both clinical and administrative duties and leads a team who are supporting patients’ dental care needs across all communities.

He originally worked as a Dentist at The Fono Central, before moving to The Fono West in 2014 to establish the new dental clinic at Henderson.

Opening our newest practice in October 2014 means The Fono now offers dental at three of our four Auckland clinics including at The Fono South in Manurewa plus the city and Henderson.

Mo says the opportunity to step into the Clinical Director role is one he is excited by.

“It’s fantastic to be offered this leadership position,” he says.

“I see it as a sign of confidence by the management and board and I look forward to fulfil the potential they see in me.”

Growing up on Auckland’s North Shore, Mo studied a BDS in Dunedin at the University of Otago. He also holds a BSc from the University of Auckland.

He has a longstanding relationship with The Fono’s city clinic, which began when he was still studying at Otago. He flew home regularly to Auckland to work there in his Uni breaks.

After completing his studies, he spent a year working in Wellington Hospital looking after a wide range of patients including those with cancer, haemophiliacs and physically and intellectually-disabled patients.

His range of experience has helped him to secure the Clinical Director role at a relatively young age.

As Clinical Director he says his focus will be to continually improve the quality of services and overall dental experience for patients.

A large part of that is listening to patients’ needs, while also developing the dental team and investing in the latest best practices for our clinics.

He says The Fono offers the full package.

“Our city clinic has always had a perception of being cheap because it’s for underprivileged people,” he says.

“My aim is to change that so we appeal to wider, mainstream community. We provide a professional high quality and broad range of services, but at a more affordable price.”

He aims to make The Fono a leader in the dental sector as well.

“From my experience working at all The Fono dental clinics at Henderson, Manurewa and the city, I believe we are capable of becoming the leading Pacific provider for dental care as well as the leading community provider.”
