Mow becomes a RACDS Fellow

Congratulations are in order for The Fono’s Clinical Director of Dental Dr Mowafaq (Mow) Amso who has passed his exams to become a Fellow of the Royal Australasian College of Dental Surgeons (RACDS). Having been with The Fono for more than six years, the charismatic dentist says this achievement is as much The Fono’s success as it is his.

Being associated with the Royal College is a high honour, and Fellowship is the highest academic level of achievement with the Royal Australasian College of Dental Surgeons.

“People become Fellows is to establish themselves as practising to high standards, following the latest information and technology, practising evidence-based dentistry and having leadership roles in the community,” says Dr Mow Amso.

Mow says The Fono is an incredibly supportive employer and invests heavily in its clinicians.

“The Fono has supported me to study and take time off to prepare for my fellowship – because a success for me is a success for The Fono.”

In terms of dental standards, Mow has always wanted to practise at the highest level, and when he became Clinical Director at The Fono it became even more important.

“I had a responsibility towards not only myself and The Fono, but towards a lot of other clinicians that work in my team.”

As Clinical Director of Dental, Mow performs both clinical and administrative duties and leads a team who are supporting patients’ dental care needs across all communities.

“Tevita Funaki (CEO), the board, and management wanted to invest in me becoming a Fellow so I can further invest in other clinicians’ education. Ultimately it means we can continue to be a world-class clinical dental facility and improve even further.”

Being a Fellow means he’ll be able to support The Fono’s clinicians better and create continuing education for them at work.

“We have a really high calibre of clinicians who practise at high standards, and this distinguishes The Fono as a clinic that is really driven and determined to provide the highest quality of care.”

It wasn’t an easy undertaking, says Mow, but it’s been made possible because of the support from his Fono family as well as his actual family.

“It was very difficult, because it’s not quite a qualification but the journey towards it is like a journey towards a qualification”.

“The amount of study that goes into this is like someone who is studying towards a degree, but you do it while you’re working fulltime, supporting a family and still maintaining a social life.”

“It involves a great deal of determination and time management, that’s why I’m grateful for the support of The Fono’s management and our dental team.”

The Fono Chief Executive Tevita Funaki says that ultimately, patients and their families are who benefits the most.

“The ultimate benefactor of Mow’s outstanding achievement are our patients and their families,” he says.

“We extend our congratulations to Mow and are proud to be supporting this achievement.”
