Childrens Health

Good child health is important not only for children and families now, but also for good health later in adulthood. A number of the risk factors for many adult diseases such as diabetes, heart disease and some mental health conditions such as depression, arise in childhood. Child health, development and wellbeing also has broader effects on educational achievement, violence, crime and unemployment.

Asthma
Asthma affects 600,000 Kiwis, according to the NZ Asthma Foundation, and symptoms are often triggered by allergens, some medicines, physical activity, smoke, flu and weather changes. The Fono Respiratory Clinic provides ongoing support to children and young people including outreach, education and free visits - for families and patients living with asthma. A holistic assessment is provided on the physical and emotional health as well as the financial and social wellbeing of the patient.

Immunisations / Vaccination / Injections
Immunisations have led to the decline of many lethal diseases including, most recently, meningococcal B meningitis, and they are offered at all Fono clinics. Injections are normally done by specially qualified nurses or doctors, having ensured beforehand that the child is not ill or suffering from allergies. Each child has his or her own document to keep a record of these injections.
