Flu Vaccine / Flu Shot

The influenza vaccine (commonly known as the flu vaccine or flu shot) is provided free for certain eligible groups but can be purchased by other people if they want them.

Reactions to immunisation are increasingly extremely rare following improvements in vaccine research and production.

Eligibility criteria for FREE seasonal influenza vaccination:

  • Pregnant women
  • Anyone under 65 years with any of the medical conditions listed below
  • Anyone aged 65 years or over

Eligible medical conditions for funded influenza vaccine

List of eligible medical conditions for free influenza immunisation (adults and children). 

Cardiovascular disease / cerebrovascular disease

  • Congenital heart disease
  • Ischaemic heart disease
  • Congestive heart failure
  • Rheumatic heart disease
  • Coronary artery disease
  • Heart attack
  • Stroke
  • Other heart conditions andcerebrovascular disease

Chronic respiratory disease

  • Asthma if on regular preventive therapy
  • Emphysema
  • Chronic obstructive airways disease
  • Cystic fibrosis
  • Chronic bronchitis
  • Other chronic respiratory disease with impaired lung function

Infants & children

  • Children aged 4 years and under who have been hospitalised for a respiratory illness, or have a history of significant respiratory illness
  • Children on long-term aspirin
  • Plus any other eligible conditions listed, for infants and children over 6 months of age

Diabetes

  • Type I & Type II diabetes

Pregnant women

  • In all trimesters

Cancer

  • Any cancer, excluding basal and squamous skin cancers if not invasive

Other conditions

  • Autoimmune disease including rheumatoid arthritis
  • Haemoglobinopathies including sickle cell anaemia
  • Immune suppression including human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) and Transplant recipients
  • Neuromuscular and central nervous system diseases including:
    - Congenital myopathy
    - Cerebal palsy
    - Epilepsy
    - Hydrocephaly
    - Motor neurone disease
    - Multiple sclerosis
    - Muscular dystrophy
    - Myasthenia gravis
    - Parkinson’s disease
  • Chronic renal disease
