Womens Health

Whether you’re pregnant, a mother, a middle aged woman or retired, there are a number of women’s health related issues that may apply to you. These include breast screening, cervical screening and maternity health. The Fono offers a number of services specifically for women, and Female GP’s are available if you feel more comfortable with a female doctor.


Breast screening support
The Fono West offers breast screening support which includes Transport and education support for Pacific women to attend their Waitemata DHB mammogram or assessment.

Cervical smear / cervical screening 
The National Cervical Screening Programme is available to all women in New Zealand between 20 and 70 years old. As one of the most preventable of all cancers, there are two things you can do to prevent cervical cancer.

Gestational diabetes test 
Gestational diabetes is when a pregnant woman has high levels of glucose because she cannot produce enough insulin (pregnant woman need 2-3 times more insulin than when not pregnant). The Fono offers test to check for gestational diabetes and can provide advice to help you manage the condition while pregnant.

Heart health
A ‘heart and diabetes check’ is a health check where you and your doctor or nurse identify your risk of having a heart attack, stroke or developing diabetes over the next 5 years. Risks are things such as age, family history, smoking, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, diabetes and being physically inactive. Some of these risk factors can't be changed, but there are others that you can decide to change.

Pregnancy test 
If you have had unprotected sex and think you could be pregnant you will need to have a pregnancy test. Pregnancy results will show two to three weeks after the time the egg was fertilised. Pregnancy tests very rarely show a negative result when you may be pregnant. If you do the test before your period was due it may give you a false result.

Maternal health covers the health of women during pregnancy, childbirth, and the post-birth period. It encompasses the health care dimensions of family planning, preconception, prenatal, and postnatal care. If you’re having a baby, you want to give them the best possible start in life. Prenatal care can help to detect any potential complications of pregnancy early, to prevent them if possible, and to refer you to appropriate specialist medical services as appropriate.

The Fono can support you in your journey to quit smoking. Our doctors, nurses and community teams can help you and we have samples of nicotine patches and gum on site at each of our clinics.
