Pregnancy / maternal health

Maternal health covers the health of women during pregnancy, childbirth, and the post-birth period. It encompasses the health care dimensions of family planning, preconception, prenatal, and postnatal care.

If you’re having a baby, you want to give them the best possible start in life. Prenatal care can help to detect any potential complications of pregnancy early, to prevent them if possible, and to refer you to appropriate specialist medical services as appropriate.

Postnatal care issues include recovery from childbirth, concerns about new-born’s care, nutrition, breastfeeding, and family planning.

Speak to your Fono GP as soon as you think you’re pregnant. They can talk you through what you need to know about your pregnancy, and help navigate you through appropriate maternity support services available to you and your new-born.
