The Fono provides affordable services including medical, dental, pharmacy, health promotion, social services, education and Whanau Ora. We deliver a combination of these services across six locations.

General Medical Services

The Fono offers full medical services for all ages including GP services and family health care, and specialist health care for specific medical conditions.

These include things such as general consultations / check-ups, accident care, diving medicals, immigration medicals, insurance medicals, diving medicals, travel vaccinations, skin treatments and dermatology, sexual health and contraception and specialist referrals.

Dental Services

Dental services offered at The Fono are affordable and convenient, and include dental consultation, scale and polish, cleaning, x-rays, fillings, extractions, crowns, bridges, dentures, emergency dental and relief of pain. 

During a dental consultation at The Fono your dentist will give you a full oral assessment to establish your oral health and recommend the best treatments for your mouth if needed.

Childrens Health

Good child health is important not only for children and families now, but also for good health later in adulthood. A number of the risk factors for many adult diseases such as diabetes, heart disease and some mental health conditions such as depression, arise in childhood.

Child health, development and wellbeing also has broader effects on educational achievement, violence, crime and unemployment.

Mens Health

On average, New Zealand men live four years less than women, and are much less likely to talk to a GP about their health. Men are at greater risk of stroke, and it’s the second biggest single cause of death and the largest cause of disability in adults in New Zealand. 

The Fono offers a number of services specifically for men, and Male GP’s are available if you feel more comfortable with a male doctor.

Whether you’re pregnant, a mother, a middle aged woman or retired, there are a number of women’s health related issues that may apply to you. These include breast screening, cervical screening and maternity health.

Chronic Disease Management

From middle age onward, chronic diseases (including heart disease, stroke, breast and lung cancer and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease) are the major causes of avoidable mortality (Ministry of Health 2004). 

Common conditions such as cardiovascular disease, diabetes and stroke are significantly more prevalent among Pacific peoples than among the general population (Ministry of Health). The Fono offers a range of health services to support people with chronic health conditions.

Social Services

The Fono offers a range of social services to cater for community needs including a mental health service, family support and family start programmes and a youth mentoring service.

The Fono also offers home based support services for enrolled Fono patients who are experiencing social issues that are impacting on the health outcomes of the family.

Public Health Services

A range of public health services are offered by The Fono to encourage healthy lifestyles, through physical exercise / activities, good nutrition and social activities.

Screening programme support and services for breast and bowel screening is offered, as well as Rheumatic Fever awareness. In some situations The Fono provides transport to group activities or appointments, for those families who do not have their own way of getting there.

The Fono has community based education services at secondary school level with involvement in the Trades at Schools Programme delivered by Oceania Career Academy.

Oceania Career Academy is New Zealand’s first Pacific Trades Private Training Establishment, delivering trades training to secondary school students.

Whanau Ora

Whanau Ora is about building the capability and capacity of Pacific families by supporting them to achieve their aspirations in health, housing, education, training and economic development.

Whanau Ora is an inclusive approach to providing services and opportunities to families. Working in partnership with families, it empowers them as a whole, rather than focusing separately on the individual and their problems.

On-site pharmacy services mean quick access for patients to your prescribed medication following your appointment, to fill any prescriptions you may require.

Highly skilled pharmacists at The Fono can offer advice in relation to your health needs. An on-site pharmacy at The Fono West is located in the waiting area, while The Fono South has a pharmacy located next door.

The Fono provides affordable healthcare services including medical, dental, pharmacy, health awareness and community support services. Our fees vary depending on your individual circumstances, such as the level of treatment or procedure you require. Your Doctor, Nurse or Dentist will explain any costs with you at the time of your appointment.

If for any reason you are unable to pay for your health services at the time of your appointment please mention this to our receptionists before you see the Doctor, Nurse or Dentist and we will discuss options with you.
