The Fono Welcomes Dr John Schuster
As the newest GP at our Blockhouse Bay and Henderson Healthcare Centres, Dr John Schuster brings a unique blend of cultural understanding and medical expertise.
Born in New Zealand and raised in Samoa, he has a deep understanding of Pacific cultures and languages. He is fluent in Samoan and dedicated to explaining medical information in a clear and accessible way.
John’s journey to The Fono began with his family and faith. "My family and with God's guidance has led me to The Fono," he says. "I hope to serve our people with the best of my ability and contribute to improving Pacific health outcomes."
His passion for medicine was shaped by his love of science and his family's legacy in the medical field. Growing up, he was driven to understand the causes and management of diseases that affected his loved ones. John’s family's medical heritage includes his grandfather, the late Dr Kitiona Naseri, and his uncle, Dr Take Naseri, both respected doctors. Several of his aunts and cousins are also dedicated nurses.
As a GP, John is particularly interested in addressing non-communicable diseases, such as diabetes and heart disease, which disproportionately affect Pacific communities.
“It’s an absolute blessing when my patients give feedback that they are satisfied with my service and approach, that they are proud of me for speaking our language and for helping them ”
In his experience, language barriers have been a significant obstacle for many Pacific patients. "When patients aren't well-informed about their health due to language barriers, it's one of the many factors that prevents our people from engaging with available services and treatment options," he says. This challenge is one he is well-equipped to address, being fluent in Samoan. "I am blessed to be able to explain medical jargon to our people, so they are well-informed," he says.
We extend a warm fa'afetai to John for joining our team and for his commitment to delivering compassionate and culturally responsive care to our Pacific communities.
