Supporting Our Wāhine: Why Cervical Screening Matters

Supporting Our Wāhine: Why Cervical Screening Matters for Women and Their Whānau

September is Cervical Screening Month, making it the perfect time to talk about cervical screening - a simple health check that could save your life.

"We know that taking this step can feel overwhelming, but screening helps us look after our health before any problems develop," says Moana Manukia, The Fono's Manager of Nursing. With years of experience supporting Pacific women through their healthcare journeys, Moana understands the unique challenges our communities face when it comes to women's health.

Research shows that Māori and Pacific communities experience higher rates of cervical-related health issues, making early and regular health checks crucial for protecting ourselves and being there for our families. Barriers have historically included concerns about privacy, fitting appointments around family responsibilities, and finding culturally appropriate support.

"That's exactly why we're working to provide services that honour our unique values and make this easier for women in our community. When we look after our own health, we're better able to care for our families and communities.”

Moana Manukia, The Fono's Manager of Nursing

Our approach focuses on making the experience comfortable and respectful, whether you choose to have the screening done by one of our healthcare providers or prefer the privacy of the self-test option. At The Fono, our diverse team of healthcare providers can offer these services with cultural sensitivity, and we can arrange interpreters in various languages.

With checks needed only every five years instead of every three, the new system is more manageable for women who are already busy caring for their families and communities. Some things other women have found helpful include wearing appropriate clothing for your appointment, asking for a healthcare provider you trust, and bringing a family member or friend for support.

If you'd like to learn more or discuss whether this health check might be right for you, please reach out to us on 0800 366 648 or visit our website at thefono.org. Taking this small step to care for your health is a powerful way to ensure you can continue being there for the people who matter most to you.
