Kahu Taurima
What is the programme?
Antenatal (maternity) care improves the health and wellbeing of the mother and baby.
The Fono's Kahu Taurima programme aims to connect pregnant Pacific women to the services they need for a healthy pregnancy. These include midwives, doctors, counsellors as well as other health and social support services within The Fono and externally too.
We deliver a culturally appropriate service that is simple, easy and safe for our mothers, babies and their families.
You will receive information that will help support you to have a healthy pregnancy and deliver a healthy baby.
Who can access it?
To be eligible for our free Kahu Taurima service, mums must be of Pasifika descent, either pregnant or have a child under the age of 5. You must live in the Waitematā District.
You can enter the program at any stage of pregnancy or your child’s life up until the age of 5 years.
If you don't live in one of these areas, we can provide referrals to other agencies to assist you in your local community.
How we help
After you join the programme, our friendly coordinator will connect with you to learn more about what support we can provide. Next they will book you an appointment with one of our nurses and a social worker.
During your time in the programme, we will get to know you, your child and your family too. We will guide and support you by providing:
- Complete health care support that includes a full clinical and wellbeing assessment
- Referrals to any of The Fono’s integrative support services your family may need
- Transport to and from appointments, if needed
- Information and education about the pregnancy journey
We will ensure you are supported throughout your early motherhood journey and receive necessary antenatal checks and care.
