Dr Siale Foliaki
The youngest of seven children, 'Alo was born to Dr. Leopino and Seini Foliaki, who migrated from Tonga to New Zealand in 1969. He followed in his father's footsteps, graduating as a medical doctor from the University of Otago in 1993 and later became a Fellow of the Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Psychiatrists in 2006.
With over 20 years of experience as a dedicated psychiatrist, 'Alo has driven better mental health outcomes for Pacific communities. His expertise includes Pacific mental health service development and delivery, leadership in mental health initiatives, research-driven culturally responsive care, and culturally informed mental health service design.
His significant contributions to mental health services have earned him recognition, including the New Zealand Order of Merit in 2023.
'Alo's life mission is anchored in his strong conviction that the mental wellbeing of Pacific peoples is deeply connected with their faith, language, and culture. He is passionate about creating and developing mental health services that respect these essential elements, making certain that the healthcare system genuinely meets the distinct needs of our Pacific community.
