Empowering Pacific Youth: The Panuve Brothers' Journey

Owen and Simone Panuve OCA

Simione and Owen Panuve, brothers from Haveluloto, Tongatapu, have found their passion in the trades at Oceania Career Academy (OCA).

Inspired by their builder father, Simione hopes to follow in his footsteps. "I've always dreamed of being a builder," Simione says. Owen, who didn’t enjoy traditional schooling, prefers OCA's focused approach. "Here, I can concentrate on one thing, and it's easier and more fun."

The brothers are driven by a strong desire to succeed and make their family proud. This motivation fuels their ambition to go into business together one day, leveraging the skills they’re gaining at OCA. "One of my plans is to work for myself and start my own business," says Simione.

They value OCA's hands-on approach, particularly Owen, who enjoys working outdoors with power tools.

OCA's sense of community and support have contributed to their enjoyment and success. "It feels like home here, like a family," Owen says, highlighting the supportive environment and strong relationships with his tutours, mentors and peers.

Since joining OCA, the brothers have developed valuable skills, including tool proficiency, understanding specifications and drawings, performing calculations and workplace safety and compliance. They have been able to apply their knowledge practically, tackling DIY projects at home with their father.

When challenges arise, OCA's support network kicks in. Owen explains how transportation to the course was a hurdle due to the distance from home. But OCA helped him obtain his driver's license, giving him independence and the ability to drive himself and Simione to school daily.

Simione praises the motivational guidance from his tutours and mentors, helping him overcome setbacks and remain focussed on his goal. Both brothers have experienced significant personal growth. Owen, once shy, now confidently communicates with others, which he recognises as an important skill required on the work site one day.

Their ultimate goal is to become qualified builders. With OCA and BCITO's support, they aim to complete Level 4 and secure apprenticeships, paving the way for their future business success.

The Panuve family is grateful for OCA's comprehensive support, including food boxes and transport assistance.

Simione concludes, "OCA has helped us a lot, and we know it can help others too."
