Healthy Minds, Healthy Futures: Managing Diabetes in Pacific Communities

Managing Diabetes in Pacific Communities
Healthy Minds LagiOla Health Coaches (L-R) Rosanna, Halamehi, Semisi and Allana.

As Pacific people, we face unique challenges in managing diabetes, with a greater risk of developing the condition and poorer health outcomes. However, research offers hope. Type 2 diabetes can be reversed through lifestyle changes, and prioritising a healthy state of mind is essential for overall wellbeing.

The emotional impact of living with diabetes is significant, and it's essential we acknowledge this. A recent Diabetes & Emotional Health survey revealed alarming statistics: 81% of Kiwis living with diabetes experience diabetes distress, and 69% experience diabetes burnout. Feelings of failure, frustration, guilt, and overwhelm are common. These emotional challenges can be increased by cultural and socioeconomic factors, which can impact diabetes management in Pacific peoples.

In our Pacific communities, strong cultural values of family and community can sometimes lead us to prioritise others' needs over our own health. Limited access to healthy food options and physical activity spaces can also add to the challenge.

Managing Diabetes Client Ravin
With support from Allana from The Fono, Ravin has turned his life around.

However, with the right support, it is possible to manage and even reverse diabetes. Ravin, from West Auckland, originally from Fiji, has been a patient of The Fono for over 20 years, is a testament to this. After being diagnosed with type 2 diabetes, Ravin struggled to come to terms with his condition. He became withdrawn, preferring to stay at home rather than going out. But with the help of The Fono medical team and Healthy Minds LagiOla Health Coach, Allana, Ravin was able to turn his life around.

With The Fono’s guidance and support, Ravin made sustainable lifestyle changes, including adopting a healthy diet and increasing his physical activity. The results are remarkable. Ravin's diabetes is now under control, and he's regained his confidence and quality of life. He is now enjoying a new lease on life, doing exercise, walking his dog, and visiting friends.

Managing Diabetes Client Miriama
Miriama's motivation for making positive lifestyle changes was driven by her love for her family.

Similarly, Miriama, a West Auckland resident of Cook Island descent, who was diagnosed with type 2 diabetes almost five years ago, has also seen significant improvements in her health. Miriama's motivation for making lifestyle changes was driven by her love for her children and grandchild. She wanted to live a longer and healthier life to be there for them. After joining The Fono's free exercise classes (Zumba), Miriama found the motivation and support she needed to make lasting lifestyle changes.

With the help of The Fono medical team and Healthy Minds LagiOla Health Coaches, Rosanna and Semisi, Miriama has learned how to cook healthier meals and make better food choices. She's lost 40kg and has reduced her reliance on medication. But more importantly, Miriama is now more energetic and happy, enjoying quality time with her loved ones. Her 7-year-old child has even joined her on her health journey, encouraging her to make healthy choices.

As Miriama says, "I feel fantastic. With the help of The Fono I'm managing my diabetes and I’m a lot more active. The health coaches have helped with constant contact about diet and exercise. It's not as hard as you think, it’s just about changing your mindset." Miriama's experience is a testament to the power of community and support to manage diabetes.
