Oceania Career Academy (OCA) is excited to announce the launch of new free* programmes specialising in Health and Wellbeing.

OCA has a proven track record as a private trades training provider, so this represents a new development. However, OCA is the education arm of The Fono’s integrated model of care. The Fono also provides wrap-around services, including Health, Medical, Social, Dental, Whānau Ora, and LagiOla - Healthy Minds. These services are offered in six locations across Auckland and Northland, including OCA. The new health and wellbeing programmes align well with The Fono’s wider remit.

Furthermore, OCA’s Academic Director Debra Robertson-Welsh points out that there is a massive shortage of workers in the health and wellbeing sector. "Our NZQA-accredited programme offers new exciting pathways into work or further study in this vital sector," she adds. And they also provide excellent career opportunities for successful graduates within The Fono, Robertson-Welsh advises. From July, OCA will offer Level 2 and Level 3 NZ certificate courses in health and wellbeing.

The Level 2 course is a foundation qualification for students who want to develop their skills and contribute effectively within their whānau and the wider community. And it also provides a pathway to entry-level jobs with health and wellbeing providers, including The Fono. The Level 3 qualification equips students to understand modern health and wellbeing workplaces. And it provides the skills and knowledge needed so graduates are work ready.

According to Robertson-Welsh, the assessment model is an innovative feature of the programmes. "We assess by a portfolio of evidence,"she advises. All class activities and projects can be used for assessment. Robertson-Welsh says that students are supported to achieve with ongoing feedback from the expert OCA team. "That way, students successfully meet their goals," she reports.

Applications are open, and up to 30 places are available on the Level 2 and 15 places on the Level 3 courses.

Both programmes are free* and run for 20 weeks.‘The health and wellbeing programmes are an exciting new development for OCA and The Fono,’ declares Executive Chair Tevita Funaki. ‘We encourage our Fono partners and stakeholders to keep an eye out for those interested in starting a career in health and wellbeing and to point them in OCA’s direction,’ he added.
