UK-Trained Dentists Bring Specialist Skills to The Fono
The Fono Manurewa Healthcare Centre is pleased to welcome two talented new dentists, Dr. Theresa (Tess) Osborne-Gregory and Dr. Jaedan Gowthaman.
With their experience in the UK's public health system, they're well-equipped to address the unique oral health challenges facing Auckland's Pacific community.
Trained in Wales and qualified in London, Tess and Jaedan spent several years working in the UK's public health system, developing their skills and expertise in community healthcare.
Their paths to dentistry were inspired by personal experiences. Tess, once a nervous patient herself, now excels at putting anxious patients at ease, while Jaedan's interest in dentistry sparked during work experience shadowing a family member.
Jaedan has a special interest in oral surgery, particularly complex wisdom teeth extractions, and Tess enjoys working with children and helping nervous patients feel more comfortable.
Seeking a better work-life balance and new experiences, Tess and Jaedan relocated to New Zealand. This move has highlighted significant differences in healthcare systems.
In the UK, they worked within a publicly-funded system, whereas in New Zealand, they've said “the financial barriers to accessing dental care are much more apparent”.
One unique challenge they've encountered is Polynesian Amelogenesis Imperfecta, an inherited condition affecting people of Polynesian descent, including New Zealand Māori. This condition requires specialised care due to weak enamel.
Tess and Jaedan prioritise prevention through education, empowering patients with clear guidance on proper home care techniques. Their proactive approach has led to significant improvements in patients' oral health, including enhanced quality of life through denture provision.
Early intervention is crucial, they stress. Regular check-ups can prevent tooth loss and promote long-term oral health.
The Fono Manurewa Healthcare Centre is delighted to welcome these talented dentists. Their expertise and passion for dentistry will undoubtedly benefit our community.
